Today I’m sharing a twist on a simple hide and seek game you can play at home. This Treasure Map Coding Activity could keep my boys busy for HOURS. Add in the fact that it is almost 100% teaching kids coding, and I’m a happy mama! It also lets me play the antagonist in the game – which is always fun!

Coding Concepts Learned

Our treasure map coding activity teaches three computational thinking and coding concepts: algorithms, 插bb视频青春网站 and sequencing.

In this activity, your coding “pirates” have to be able to break down the large problem (missing treasure) into smaller problems (step-by-step directions to find the treasure). I love to have my boys write down the instructions, then I follow them EXACTLY. This usually ends up in lots of learning, and laughter!
Algorithms: An algorithm is a set of instructions given to complete a specific task. In this activity, our pirate coders will need to create an algorithm to direct their parent to the buried treasure.
Sequences: Sequence refers to the order of events. The order of events is pretty important when looking for buried treasure! Again, after my boys are done with their map, I follow their directions EXACTLY so I can show them where to debug their code!

Materials Needed for the Game

A valuable item that can be hidden
A pen and paper
A compass (use a phone app if you don’t have one on hand)

How to Play the Treasure Map Coding Activity

We find something “valuable” in the house or outside, and I tell my boys to hide it somewhere. (“Valuable” here means something well-loved, not necessarily fragile. A stuffed animal, toy, or mom’s favorite pillow seems to work perfectly.)
Now, my boys get to be the pirates, and code me a map to the buried treasure!
Choose a spot in the house to act as the starting point. From there your pirate coders will need to write out the directions to the treasure using their compass and counting their steps.
An example of a treasure map algorithm would be:
1. Head NORTH 10 steps
2. Head EAST 5 steps
3. Head North 5 steps
4. Head SOUTH 8 steps
5. Look down for the treasure!
The father away from the treasure the starting point is, the harder this activity becomes.
You can write out your instructions on a blank piece of paper or you can consider our complimentary printable set that will also teach kids about the directions on a compass.

This game can also be played outdoors! Costumes are optional but encouraged 🙂

The first time we played this game, I walked them through the steps. I have no doubt that an older kid could jump right in, but with my two young boys, I wanted to make sure to model what the game looked like. Now, they beg to play it, and they don’t even realize that they’re learning until we talk about the steps they went through.

Rubik’s Maze Activity

If you only have one Rubik’s Cube, you can turn it into a fun escape game! Your kids can code their way across the face of the cube with any limitations you give them!

What you need for this coding activity:

Rubik’s Cube
Construction paper
Painters tape or stickers to mark the start and finish
Game pieces ‘Robots’ e.g Monopoly Pieces

Here’s how to play this coding activity:

Cut out squares of paper to match the colors on the sides of your cube. (Usually Red, Yellow, Blue, Green, Orange, White)
Put all of the small squares of paper into a cup or bowl.
Each child should pick a monopoly piece to act as their ‘Robot’
Now is where you can choose one (or more) colors from the cup! Each color you choose becomes “lava” that your “robot” will melt in! Start with one color per game, then increase to two or three if your coder kid is getting too good!
Help your little one code their way across the “Maze”, but watch out for the lava! (color(s) you pulled from the cup)
- Use forward arrows, sideways arrows, jumps, etc. to get your “robot” from one side of the cube to the other! Have your coder write down their code to make it easier to debug. If they fall in the “lava” they have to go back to the beginning and try again!
To make gameplay trickier, add multiple cubes together!
To make it trickier still, allow for a 3-dimensional game – where coders can turn the Rubik’s cube while still coding their way across it!

If you have construction paper, this could turn into a full-body game, with people trying to escape instead of toys. My boys LOVED this adaptation!

Rubikubism

You may have seen some of the incredible creations artists and students are making with Rubik’s Cubes lately. These designs can be simple or ornate, and they fall right into the STEAM category.

This activity would be a great way to introduce the idea of Hex Codes – the coding that computers use to differentiate and recognize colors. To make something larger, you can simply add cubes together. The more cubes you have, the bigger you can go!

This website is a great place to start if you are looking for some ideas. If you only have one cube and younger kids, you might start with the basics – how to turn the sides and change the colors. From there, you can start with a basic shape like a cross, an X, or some other shape of your choosing.
